Gold State Coats - Household Cavalry Musicians

Drawings of the coronation of Charles II (22 April 1661) show The Life Guards
kettle-drummers and trumpeters wearing virtually the same coats as today.
It is said that parliament refused to pay for the livery of 'musicians' (they even
begrudged paying for King Charles' small army of four Regiments), so the King
paid them and clothed the drummer and trumpeter from his own privy purse,
and dressed them in his own livery. The only change in the coat since then has
been a slight change in the shoulder and collar — and also the royal cipher of the
reigning monarch is worn back and front

Dress Tunics

State tunics have remained the same since the old 'tail coats' were abolished in 1856.
The braid has not changed; however, the buttons were changed for the amalgamation
of the 1st and 2nd Life Guards (in 1922), and The Blues And Royals (in 1969).

Aiguillettes were first worn in 1829. The name means 'needles' (in French), and these
are the points which hang at the end of the shoulder cords. No other Regiments had
aiguillettes such as those of the Household Cavalry, although some line Regiments have
small 'shoulder knots'. Their adoption was the order of King George IV, and they have
remained unchanged ever since
