Vehicles On Parade - 1950s

Daimler (Dingo) Scout Car

The Daimler Scout Car seems to have been commonly referred to
as the 'Dingo', but this came about by mistake - in fact the name 'Dingo'
had been given to a similar vehicle produced by Alvis.

The Daimler Scout Car had a 7.7 mm Light Machine Gun, weighed 3 tons,
had a crew of 2, had a 6-cylinder petrol engine, a speed of 55 mph,
and generated 60 bhp at 4200 rpm. It was 10' 5" long, 5' 8" wide,
and 4' 11" high. Over time, it was replaced by the Ferret Scout Car.

Daimler (Saladin) Armoured Car

This was very much a larger version of the Daimler Scout Car, and was
fitted with two steering wheels (one at the front, one at the rear), enabling
a rapid tactical move - assisted by 5 gears forward and reverse!

It had two 7.62mm guns, and a 1.76mm Machine Gun, giving an
overall weight of 11.4 tons.
With a Rolls Royce petrol engine, generating
170 bhp at 3570 rpm, it had a speed of 44.7 mph - for its crew of 3.
It was just over 16' long, 8' 4" wide, and 8' 7" high.

Saracen Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC)

This versatile vehicle satisfied a number of requirements,
whether as carrier for "infantry" personnel, or as a mobile office.

It had a 7.62mm Browning Gun in the turret, and 7.62 Bren LMG
in the rear hatch, providing an overall weight of 10 tons.
The Rolls Royce 8-cylinder petrol engine generated 160 bhp at
3750 rpm, and a very respectable speed of 45 mph.

The crew varied from just 2 to 10 persons, and the vehicle was
17' 2" long, 8' 4" wide, and 8' 1" long.
