The Colonels

This appointment was introduced into
the Household Cavalry in March 1943.

The Household Cavalry Regiments are
overall commanded by an Officer (from one of the
two Regiments of Household Cavalry) who usually
holds the rank of Colonel in the Army.

He is the professional head of the
Household Cavalry, and as such he is
responsible to the two Gold Sticks
for its day-to-day operation.

It is customary within the Household Cavalry
to call this Officer by his original title
of 'Lieutenant-Colonel Commanding
Household Cavalry'.

He also holds the appointment of
Silver Stick-in-Waiting (for which he carries
an ebony cane with a silver head), deputising
for Gold Stick-in-Waiting in the event of
the latter being absent or unavailable for any
State Occasions or functions.

The Lieutenant-Colonel Commanding
Household Cavalry is responsible to the
the Major-General Commanding the
Household Division (London District).
